Samsung to launch A3 and A5 in India tomorrow

INDIATODAY.IN  NEW DELHI, JANUARY 5, 2015 | UPDATED 16:34 IST

Samsung is expected to launch its A3 and A5 smartphones in India tomorrow at an event in Mumbai. The two phones belong to Samsung's range of premium phones that have metal body. With these two phones -- and the rumoured A7 -- Samsung is hoping to change the perception that its phones are plasticky and not stylish.
"The Galaxy A5 and A3 offer a beautifully crafted full metal unibody, slim design, superior hardware and the best possible social media experience," JK Shin, CEO and head of IT & mobile communication at Samsung Electronics, said in October while announcing the devices in the Korean market.
The A5 is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor. It has 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage and support for microSD card. The device has a 4.7-inch AMOLED screen with 720p resolution. The phone has 13-megapixel primary camera and 5-megapixel front camera.
The A3, which is the cheaper phone, has a 4.5-inch AMOLED screen with 540p resolution. It is also powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor but has only 1.5GB RAM. The internal storage is 16GB and a microSD card is supported. The primary camera in this phone has a 8-megapixel image sensor while the front camera can shoot 5-megapixel images.
"The Galaxy A5 and A3 are Samsung's slimmest smartphones to date, featuring refined full metal unibody designs that are 6.7mm and 6.9mm thin, respectively. Both devices will come in a variety of colors, including Pearl White, Midnight Black, Platinum Silver and Champagne Gold, to accommodate the personal style and preference of diverse users,"a Samsung spokesperson had said earlier.
For now we don't know the price tags that the A5 and A3 will carry in India. But considering the US price of around $400, the A5 may cost somewhere between Rs.25,000 to Rs.30,000 in India. Similarly, the A3, which is priced around $330 in the US, may cost around Rs.20,000  in India.
In last one and half years Samsung has lost some of its pace in the Indian smartphone market. while it still sells adequately reliable smartphones in the mainstream market -- in the high-end market where it has the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S phones the company is stronger -- the competition from Chinese and Indian firms has eroded the appeal of Samsung phones. In most cases, the Chinese and Indian companies offer better hardware than what Samsung sells at the same price.
